Who dares make light of small beginnings? Zechariah 4:10

Everyone is familiar with the story of Nehemiah who rebuilt the wall that surrounded Jerusalem.  Not many, though, know the story of Zerubbabel.

Zerubbabel was the first governor of Jerusalem when the king of Persia released the Jews to return and rebuild the city.  A motley crew of former slaves followed him to the wreckage site of Jerusalem and began the work of rebuilding the temple. The foundation stones were barely laid when discouragement and apathy set in, all but stopping the work.  But he wouldn’t give up.  He was committed to the task and if he had to do it all by himself, the temple would be rebuilt.

With every great work of God there is a lesson to be learned.  His came through the words of the prophet Zechariah, “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” the prophet thundered.  “For who dares make light of small beginnings?” (Zechariah 4:6&10)

Small beginnings. Zerubbabel knew about small beginnings.  Maybe you do too.  But God, the Lord God Almighty, is the Creator of small beginnings.  Every great story in the bible begins small and ends big.  You might remember the birth of a baby in a manger who became the Savior of all mankind. Stories like that.

Don’t despise small beginnings, especially the one that you are engaged in right now.  God’s preferred path to greatness are seeds sown and hidden in the dirt until He gives the word to grow.  He takes what is the very least in the eyes of the world and empowers the work for eternal success and godly gain.

Not by your strength, mind you.  Not by your ingenuity, wisdom or persistence either.  God will supply the power of life to seeds that are faithfully sown.  He often uses trouble to get us moving in the direction that leads to blessing.  What looks small and insignificant in my eyes are the building blocks that form the foundations for godly growth.

Small beginnings? Take heart.  It’s the way God built His church.

Good word for the New Year – “Eye has not seen . . what God has prepared for those that love Him.” Keep sowing. Harvest will come.

Thanks so much, Allen. Sowing needs to become a priority in His church again.
